My Son the Marathoner
The following is an unedited contribution from one of our classmates, Al Lashua.
Hello Fellow Classmates.
I wish to relay a story about my son. His name is Bob and for the passed 10 years he has been running Marathons. He has run the Boston, the New York
and the Washington D. C. Marathons
That in it self is not really out of the ordinary as many people out there have probably done the same tours. Three years ago he signed up
to run Marathons on seven continents. He started out in Praque then ran the Great Wall of China for 25 miles. As you can see in pictures it is all up
and down stairs. Well this passed February he had a very nice article written about him in the Sentinel
After the Great Wall tour, he was asked along
with several hundred others, if they would like to represent the USA as good will ambassadors to Libya and particpate in an Ultra Marathon. Only four
people agreed to go because of the fear factor of the US bombing and killing the dictators son and other relatives. These people donated their time and
money as they are not sponsored by any one but themselves. They had to carry their own water bottles and have then refilled at aid stations, and they
had to have tents and anti-venom kits because of the snakes and other reptiles. The race was one hundred and twenty miles through the desertand ran
over three days. This is the eqivalent of running six marathons. They only slept about three to four hours a day. The daytime tempatures were in the
80's and at night time low 40's. The USA team was only one of a small group to have all four runners finish. One girl who ran finished eighth in the
field, the other male finished in the top ten out of several hundred from several counties. My son finished 47 in his age group but he did finish and
the last member she finished in the middle of the pack. She is writing a documentary on the whole experience that will be seen sometime on the
National Geographics Channel.
Hope this did not bore you but it is one proud dad and one of your classmates.
Hope to see you at the Reunion.
